Cyprus is the third Member State of the current Trio, along with Poland and Denmark. The 18month period of the Trio began on July 1, 2011, with the Polish Presidency and will be completed on December 31, 2012, when the Cyprus Presidency will be concluded.
Prior to the commencement of the Trio’s 18month period, Poland, Denmark and Cyprus prepared a common Programme of their Trio Presidency, covering the 18month Trio period.
The text was prepared by the three Member States, in close cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, as well as other EU institutions. The Programme refers to the main issues expected to be dealt with by the three Presidencies.
The 18month Programme consists of two parts, namely the strategic and the operation part. The former, includes the contemporary challenges faced by the EU, as well as the main thematic areas which would be dealt with by the three Presidencies, while the latter includes the important issues that will be addressed for each Council formation during the 18months.
In the framework of preparing the 18month Programme and of wider cooperation between the three Member States, meetings were conducted in the three member states, as well as, in Brussels. The content of the 18month Programme was finalized on May 27, 2011, in Nicosia, with the presence of representatives of the three Member States, the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU and the European Commission.
The 18month Programme of Poland – Denmark and Cyprus was approved by the General Affairs Council on June 21, 2011.
The three Member States’ cooperation extended beyond the preparation of the Trio Programme, as during the Polish and Danish Presidencies, representatives of Poland, Denmark and Cyprus met, with the aim to exchange expertise on general Presidency issues.
Among other actions that took place within the context of cooperation of the three countries 16 European Think-tanks published a report with suggestions for further action by the Trio of Poland, Denmark and Cyprus.
